Nippon Gases and Sarralle join forces to put into operation the world's first ladle preheating station capable of working with green hydrogen as fuel.
On its way to assist companies in the challenge of decarbonisation and sustainability, Nippon Gases, with the collaboration and support of Taiyo Nippon Sanso, a Japanese operating company in Nippon Sanso Holdings Group and Sarralle, goes a step further and provided to the steel market with a cutting-edge technology capable of using green hydrogen in the steel manufacturing process.
Nippon Gases and Sarralle installed the world's first ladle preheating station capable of running entirely on green hydrogen, achieving zero CO2 emissions in this ladle. This milestone, together with other innovations and technologies, will allow the steel market to take an important step towards its goal of zero carbon emissions in the entire production process.
The steel industry has always been considered a traditional energy-intensive market, with high CO2 emissions. It is estimated that 9% of total CO2 emissions to the atmosphere come from the steel sector. In this context, its decarbonisation represents a major challenge that stems from the need to invest in innovative technologies.
The installation of this ladle preheating station, capable of using green hydrogen, is a highly innovative project. The existing air-based burner used by the ladle preheating station was replaced by a state-of-the-art oxygen burner that uses green hydrogen as the main fuel. In this way, CO2 emissions are eliminated, as only water vapour is generated during the combustion of green hydrogen. On the way to achieving the decarbonisation targets, the project demonstrate that the new hydrogen-oxygen burner is able to reproduce the usual ladle pre-heating ramps, but allowing it to operate with zero CO2 emissions.
Nippon Gases is supplier of the green hydrogen and proprietary burner technology that Sarralle will installed at the facility.
