Together for a sustainable agri-food supply chain

The eco-friendly synergy of Nippon Gases, Biomet Gas, Ekoinnova and Efficient Farm Engineering
NIPPON GASES INDUSTRIAL, a company of the Nippon Gases Italia Group, has recently signed a collaboration agreement with three important partners operating in the context of the circular economy, BIOMET GAS, active in the field of engineering for renewable energy plants and know-how in the management and work supervision processes, EKOINNOVA, active in the field of environmental engineering, biomethane production and agricultural and agro-industrial production and processing; EFFICIENT FARM ENGINEERING, operating as General Contractor of plants for the production of energy from renewable sources and agricultural, livestock and agro-industrial production.

The agreement aims to develop an innovative and sustainable supply chain for the production of BioMethane, starting mainly from agro-livestock products. The agreement envisages, thanks to the valuable contribution of all the companies involved, the development of projects for biogas upgrading, the liquefaction of BioMethane, the production and valorisation of Carbon Dioxide separated from BioMethane, and Hydrogen from biogas from sugar beet production waste.

Each company will play a key role in the project. Nippon Gases, thanks to its consolidated partnership with Hysytech, will provide the supply chain with innovative technologies and know-how for the design, construction and management of plants for the treatment of biogas and the production of BioMethane, the liquefaction into BioGNL, the purification and liquefaction of Carbon Dioxide in the form of BioCO2, as well as for the possible conversion of BioMethane into BioHydrogen.

Biomet Gas, Ekoinnova and Efficient Farm Engineering, will have the task of developing the supply chain by ensuring the identification and procurement of raw materials, the necessary authorisations for the start-up of the plants and the smooth running of the project.

On one hand, the new supply chain will see a network of agricultural producers committed to cultivating products whose residual organic matrices contain a high carbon and hydrogen content and are therefore suitable for biogas production. This production will be flanked by a network of supplementary biomass sources that guarantee, in addition to the aforementioned organic matrices, a stable and reliable supply for the production of biogas and consequently of BioMethane.

Regularly fed organic matrices and biomasses will generate, through fermentation processes, a gas rich in methane and containing carbon dioxide, called biogas. This biogas, treated in special upgrading units, will enable the production of BioMethane, BioGNL, Biogenic Carbon Dioxide and Bioldhydrogen. The products thus obtained will be valorised for the purpose of supplying utilities in the area for a wide variety of uses, creating a pathway to encourage the conversion from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

"This is an important initiative that sees Nippon Gases as an active promoter of carbon neutrality solutions for the agri-food supply chain, a concrete help for customers in achieving their carbon reduction targets", comments Davis Reginato, General Manager of Nippon Gases Industrial.

"I am very pleased with the agreement signed with Nippon Gases, Biomet Gas and Ekoinnova, who have chosen our company as a partner. The new agro-food chain will operate in respect of the existing realities without impacting or taking away anything, but rather will allow the implementation of the recovery of waste materials, helping all supply chains to reach the sustainability targets set by the laws in force", comments Bortolo Ghislotti, Sole Director of Efficient Farm Engineering.

"The initiative will bring a significant socio-economic impact on the country's agriculture by providing for the direct involvement of all the active Parties in the agro-food, energy and service supply chain, guaranteeing sustainable agricultural activities, added value for all the supply chain operators, agricultural, agro-industrial and energy system operators, operating in all Italian regions, including the islands, increasing current employment, agricultural and non-agricultural, with a significant contribution of technological innovation, circular economy in a compulsory short/short supply chain regime, environmental protection and enhancement of production capacities with reference also to territorial cultural activities, active involvement of local authorities and families in terms of guaranteeing economic and social resources" comments Cosimo D'Onghia, agronomist, Ekoinnova Technical Director.

"The project is challenging and stimulating; it envisages the construction/conversion of several biomethane plants at national level within a virtuous production process that will have a positive impact both in the supply of technical gas in a sustainable way, and from an economic point of view in the territory thanks to the creation of a sugar beet supply chain", comments Roberto Amboni, Biomet Gas partner.
BIOMET GAS stems from the many years of experience of its founders in the field of renewable energies, engineering, project management, and the management of the processes required to comply with the roll-outs of large projects at national and international level that involve the realisation and implementation of several individual plants within a defined time frame, guaranteeing the realisation and maintenance of the objectives. Guaranteeing the result is the project management structure which, with its experience from countless implementation projects, ensures the continuous monitoring of activities and the implementation of all necessary corrective measures to achieve the plan.
EKOINNOVA is active in the environmental engineering sector, in the production of energy from renewable sources and in particular from solar energy, in the production of biomethane and in the aggregation of organic matrices useful for the production of biogas and secondary products, agricultural and agro-industrial production and processing. It is also active in the provision of services for the aggregation of organic matrices, in the management of the quality and quantity of the supply of biomass for energy production and derived products such as sugar, compost, sulphur, ammonium sulphate, bioethanol, biopropanol; in the field of agronomic management of crops, including through the use of organic farming methods in application of Reg. EU 889/09, in the imposition of production parameters and environmental protection through Agriculture 4.0 systems; in the sector of the creation and management of networks of producers and production of agricultural and food products with particular attention to distribution and marketing networks on the agri-food market and distribution for direct consumption.
EFFICIENT FARM ENGINEERING operates in the field of design and implementation of technological automation in agriculture and in the environment, and the design and construction of zootechnical plants including related civil works; it acts as General Contractor of plants for the production of energy from renewable sources and agricultural, zootechnical and agro-industrial production; it also has knowledge in the management of agricultural and agro-zootechnical activities, agro-industrial production and processing.
