What is dry ice?

Dry ice is carbon dioxide (CO) in solid form with a temperature of -78.5˚C (109.3.°F). The unique properties of dry ice make it a versatile tool in a wide range of industrial and domestic applications.

Dry Ice does not melt, instead it sublimates and turns into a gas, leaving no residue. Dry ice is produced by compressing and cooling gaseous CO to a liquid state, and then allowing it to expand to form CO snow. The dry ice snow is then compressed by a hydraulic press into conveniently sized blocks, slices and pellets.

What is dry ice used for?

Dry ice has a diverse range of applications, making it a versatile tool in various industries. Valued for its ability to maintain low temperatures it is commonly used for transporting food, medical products, and other perishable items and can also be used to create special effects.

Its benefits also make dry ice deal for industrial cleaning, which involves shooting dry ice pellets at high velocities to remove contaminants without causing damage or leaving any residue.

How long does dry ice last?

Dry ice will hold its temperature, but its effectiveness as a cooling agent will decrease as it sublimates.

Nippon Gases recommend ordering the quantity of dry ice required for your immediate or short-term use. As a guide, dry ice typically sublimates at a rate of 5% to 15% product weight per day, depending on the thermal properties of the dry ice storage container and the external temperature profile

The durability of dry ice is variable and significantly affected by factors such as the type of product, the ambient temperature and humidity, the quality of the storage container and the number of times the container is opened and closed.
